Stress Management

When life is busy, or all your energy is focused on a special project, its all too easy to find yourself off balance, not paying enough attention to important areas of your life.

While you need to have drive and focus if you are going to get things done, taking this too far can lead to frustration and intense stress. That is when its time to take a "helicopter view" of your life, so that you can bring things back into balance; this is where Holistic Therapies Northwest can help!

Quick stress reduction

The key to de-stressing in the moment is getting away from or removing yourself from the stressor. Developing new habits, which regularly remove you and distract you from stressors and stressful situations and pressures is essentially how to manage stress on a more permanent basis.
In this modern world it is difficult if not impossible to change stressful situations. What we can do however is change and reduce our exposure to those stressful situations.

Learning healthier ways to manage stress

If your methods of coping with stress aren’t contributing to your greater emotional and physical health, it’s time to find healthier ones. There are many healthy ways to manage and cope with stress, but they all require change. You can either change the situation or change your reaction. When deciding which option to choose, it’s helpful to think of the four A's: Avoid, Alter, Adapt or Accept.

Since everyone has a unique response to stress, there is no “one size fits all” solution to managing it. No single method works for everyone or in every situation, so experiment with different techniques and strategies. Focus on what makes you feel calm and in control.

Dealing with Stressful Situations: The Four A’s

Change the situation:

  • Avoid the stressor
  • Alter the stressor

Change your reaction:

  • Adapt to the stressor
  • Accept the stressor

Stress is something that occurs when certain pressures exceed our perceived ability to cope with them. At one time or another we have all felt its grasp, but the good news is that we can do something about it and significantly reduce the impact it has on our lives.

The effect that stress can have on our health, wellbeing and relationships is immense. Research has shown that stress has now overtaken the common cold as the most often cited reason for workplace absence.

Further research has shown that high stress levels can lead to:

  • Heart attacks / strokes
  • Cancer
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Obesity
  • Ulcers and diabetes
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Nervous breakdown

Stress can be reduced by:

  • Practising meditation and relaxation techniques.
  • Physical fitness programme.
  • Optimal Nutrition and hydration.
